SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER, SOCIETY FOR THE PRESERVATION AND APPRECIATION OF ANTIQUE MOTOR FIRE APPARATUS IN AMERICA

American Heroes Airshow / Rollin' to the Rescue

Hansen Dam Recreation Area, Valley Terrace, CA

Saturday, July 19, 2003

Nineteen CFE member's apparatus joined with some two dozen vintage ambulances and hearses from the Professional Car Society (PCS) for the annual Rollin' to the Rescue emergency vehicle "code 3" caravan and static display at the American Heroes Air Show at Hansen Dam Recreation Area, Valley Terrance, CA on July 19.

In addition to the emergency vehicles from the two clubs, both LA City and LA County FD had fire apparatus on display, along with local, state and federal law enforcement and rescue groups. Some 20 helicopters were on display, and both L.A. City and L.A. County FDs did water drops, including an awesome red, white and blue coordinated drop by three L.A. city copters. There were educational and informational displays by area agencies and vendors as well.

The CFE group staged next to Joe Ortiz's house in Sun Valley in morning and then met up with the PCS group and merged into one big parade with an LAPD escort to the park. CFE members who brought rigs included the Bramm Family, Mike Britt, Ron Dierkens, Lou Farah, Darrell Gilbert, Jim Koenecamp, Dave Kromka, Mike McDonald, Kevin O'Connell, Rob O'Niel, and Mark Platt. Plus, many other CFE members were present for the day's events.

Perhaps the most unusual rig present was Darrell Gilbert's 1979 Crown widebody cab, "T-1/3", part of one of the Crowns used in the making of the movie "Terminator 3" which made it's first public event appearance (with Don Croucher behind the wheel for a short period of time!) Ron Dierkens' Crown held up the new CFE club flagpole, flying the U.S. and California state flags. CFE members were able to escape the heat and humidity thanks to "E-Z-up" tents provided by the Bramms, complete with cool mist sprays. For more photos and information about the event visit www.freqofnature.com which has extensive, detailed photos of all the helicopters at the show, and also we are told that photos will soon be posted to websites of the Southern California Chapter of PCS and the American Hereos Air Show.
